This publication summarises a review of the suitability of publicly available resources on gout medication and its use for health professionals as well as consumers and their whānau. The review was undertaken in the context of improving health literacy.
The publication outlines: the review processes the health literacy skills people with gout need and the literacy skills they actually have findings from both the resource assessment and interviews with consumers and health professionals recommendations for improving resources and how they are used.
Purpose
The intent of the review was to assess the suitability of information on gout medication for users and practitioners. This arose from concerns about people not understanding that gout is a serious condition that can be treated effectively and then managed through appropriate use of relevant medication.Without exception, the resources reviewed had been created with good intent by resource developers who recognised that people needed more information to better understand and manage gout.
We hope that the findings and recommendations in this report will provide ideas and information to support resource developers as they continue to produce and improve resources for their communities.
