Best practice review of sport and physical activity interventions for young people aged 13-18 years (Vol. 1 & 2)

Presently, the landscape for sport and physical activity services for youth in New Zealand is fragmented and service provision is complex across several sectors, at government and non-government level. Taken with national and international trends and forecasts of physical activity and sport participation, SPARC identified the need to conduct a sector-wide review including national consultation and a best practice review of available literature. To understand national and international practice and best practice, as well as the topography of the sectors involved in service delivery, three methods were used to collect and examine data: 1. A systematic literature review covering physical activity measurement, benefits of sport and physical activity, physical activity guidelines and policies, theoretical frameworks, sport and physical activity contexts for young people, determinants of sport and physical activity, policy frameworks and teacher education, and sport and physical activity interventions targeting young people aged 13-18 years. 2. An environmental scan of current and recent physical activity and sport initiatives throughout New Zealand. 3. A nationwide consultation process using focus group methodology and quantitative questionnaire methods across a number of sectors relevant to sport and physical activity in the youth age group, including youth themselves.
