This rapid review adds to the knowledge base of evidence informing services and programmes for social housing. Specifically, what the outcomes are for social housing tenants relative to the proportion of social housing in an area.
Neighbourhood Social Mix and Outcomes for Social Housing Tenants: Rapid Review found that the relationship between concentrated social housing and outcomes for social housing tenants does not necessarily have negative outcomes for the tenant. The evidence in the report uncovered that the benefits were either mixed or undemonstrated.
Some of the negative effects associated with social housing concentrations might be mitigated by addressing design, control and access issues.
Factors highlighted in this rapid review highlights factors that might mitigate negative outcomes for social housing tenants irrespective of the social mix proportions they live with. These factors include: the design of both dwellings and the surrounding environment; the allocation and management of tenants, neighbourhood services, amenities and policing; and the retention of housing and community opportunities for social housing and low income households.
