The Ministry manages a small budget available each year to fund researcher/provider initiated research projects selected through a competitive process.

The aims of this project are to:

  • review the national and international literature on venue exclusion policies and processes
  • identify the impact of self-exclusion process on problem gambling and patrons control over gambling
  • identify perceptions of the impact, effectiveness and usefulness of the current self-exclusion programmes in place at The Southern Trust venues and at the Christchurch Casino (e.g. minimum and maximum lengths of ban, contract processes, legal implications of breaching contracts, assessment by a qualified treatment provider prior to an exclusion being lifted)
  • identify differences between self-excluding and venue excluded patrons in relation to the effectiveness of exclusion processes, breach occurrence and frequency, and venue identification
  • identify perceived benefits and flaws of the current exclusion processes (from venue and patron perspectives)
  • identify how venues can more effectively implement and support exclusion processes, including effective mechanisms for informing patrons about the self-exclusion processes
  • identify methods to support and encourage venue patrons to use the self-exclusion processes.
