In 2010, around one half (51%) of young current smokers wanted to stop smoking. Around two-thirds (67%) of young people who had smoked in the past 12 months had tried to quit, and around one-quarter (27%) of those were now non-smokers. Although Māori who were smokers were more likely to report trying to quit, young Māori who tried to quit were less likely to now report being non-smokers, compared with non-Māori.
