English in the New Zealand Curriculum is one of seven curriculum statements covering the essential learning areas of the New Zealand curriculum. Writing is one of the substrands of this curriculum statement. Through writing, students learn to communicate, record, and understand thoughts and feelings. Exploration of the use of words through writing extends and challenges students’ thinking processes.

ERO evaluated the quality of teaching of writing at Years 4 and 8 in 159 schools during Term 4, 2006.

Good practice found in three of the schools is set out in the companion report: The Teaching of Writing: Good Practice in Years 4 and 8 (July 2007)
