This is the second release in an annual report series presenting statistics on children (aged 10 to 13) and youth (14 to 16) involved in the child offending and youth justice processes.

The first report was titled 'Youth Justice Statistics in New Zealand'. The new title 'Child and Youth Offending Statistics in New Zealand' effects the inclusion of child offending statistics. Before 2007, youth offending statistics were presented in a chapter of the Ministry's annual report series titled 'Conviction and Sentencing of Offenders in New Zealand'.

The report present information sourced from New Zealand Police and Statistics New Zealand. It also uses courts data derived from the previous Law Enforcement System (LES) and the current Case Management System (CMS). Because courts data were drawn from LES and CMS, caution should be exercised when interpreting changes in the number of court cases across the system transition period.

Two reports for the period 1992 to 2007 have been produced: a full report and a summary report.

The full report is titled Child and Youth Offending Statistics in New Zealand: 1992 to 2007. It examines trends in Police apprehensions for both age groups from 1995 to 2007, and in prosecutions, convictions and sentencing of young people from 1992 to 2007.

The summary report is titled Statistical Bulletin: An Overview of Child and Youth Offending Statistics in New Zealand: 1992 to 2007. It presents a high level summary of key trends.
